JAYAPURA: THE CAPITAL OF PAPUA

WELCOME TO PAPUA

Papua oh Papua. What is in your mind when you hear the word Papua? Is it a place where people with a physical form and appearance of the typical pickup raises horror in you? Or you can just imagine that Papua merely a place that serves such savagery and violence that often appear in newspapers and television media lately?

Whatever is your minds about Papua, I just want to share about Papua from different sides. Papua, for me personally (my sister also, Tutik) has incised deep meaning for our lives. Because we grew up on the island paradise known as Earth's. Without a long-winded I will soon begin. And it starts from the introduction will be the city of Jayapura

Why Jayapura?
Because the provincial capital of Jayapura is the first in Indonesia's easternmost region. Uniquely Jayapura was already so grandmothers or grandfathers. I used to think the only cities in Java and Sumatra are the elderly. In this sense a hundred years old. Apparently Jayapura too old. Want to know the actual age of this city and when exactly he was born?

Then we must go back to 1909. Jayapura is located in the middle of the north island now known as Papua (formerly called New Guinea. Papua stretches from the western end where the city of Sorong is located to the eastern end of Port Moresby where the city is located. At that time the island of Papua controlled by the two European countries. The western part of the island is owned by the Dutch Government which is the extension of the kingdom of the Netherlands in Europe and the eastern German state.

But this time the boundary between the two countries have not yet formed an unknown alias. Then the two countries agreed to form a team that will work establishing boundaries between the two regions dominated by these two different countries.

They began working. Surely this serious work that needs special skills but legally valid. Because of its seriousness Dutch government issued a government regulation no. 4 dated August 28, 1909 are received directly by the resident assistant northern New Guinea. For additional information North New Guinea, I use this term, under the Resident of Ternate. While the representative office in Manokwari Manokwari is now the capital of West Papua province. While now the capital of Jayapura in Papua province). No content of government decisions. 4 in the form of sending a military detachment to go to New Guinea to carry out the task of making the boundary between the two countries.

Ya this is exactly what the original sentence is written in Dutch, "Detachment is mainly to carry out preparatory work for the establishment of a commission Dutch-German border arrangements that will work on next year, and thereafter at the discretion of the resident assistant in question, the petuntuk resident of Ternate, and implemented by subordinates, something that regular exploration in the area and as much as possible to confirm and continue the power in there ".

A month later the detachment was finally moving. Precisely on 28 September 1909 using a cluster of several vessels ships known as the fleet of sailing "Edi". This small sailing fleet commanded by Captain Infantry FJP Sachse is then docked in the bay where the port of Jayapura Humboldt-where the ships docked goods and passengers, is now located. But do not imagine that once this is so. Surely there is no harbor. So there is no place for vessels of Hr.Ms. Edi. To get to the land of the passenger ship "Edi" should use the lifeboats and row the boat directly to the mainland. Now the fleet is not only brought the captain of the ship but also brings a number of researchers incorporated into the commission will be tasked to make preparation for marking the boundary between the Netherlands and Germany in New Guinea (the sentence is so in Dutch). The Commission is chaired by Marine Lt. JLH class I Luymes where the captain Sachse became one of its members.

It's a serious job and takes many months. Therefore all members of this small fleet decided to "go down" to the ground and form a small pemukinan there. Too bad because if you continue to stay aboard. But do not imagine that these people went down to the ground and make a permanent residence in the form of a wooden house or a house wall as we know it today.

The first thing they do is find a place. Because they go to actually land a small sandy area at the edge of the river that became a big part of the Papuan jungle. After conducting a small survey of these people eventually find the right spot near the creek clear watery. Creek was originally named Nubai. But the people-especially people of Papua today, already know the name Anafri. Creeks in the mountains tipped Nubai Cycloop and branches of the creek named Nubai Anafre empties into Humboldt Bay. For ease of writing I will immediately mention a branch of the tributary rivers Anafre Nubai by name.

Anafre river divides the city of Jayapura. As a child my mother would bring and the brothers there. Not in the river near the estuary, but more in the upstream direction that go into a place where Ajen (Assistant General) is located. Ajen the special division of the Army that if in Jayapura means entering into territory KODAM Cenderawasih XVII. I forget that first-year, probably around the year 1973 - Our family lived in Kampung Baru - Doc 9 and there was no water supply there. Therefore, once a week to bring my mother and younger siblings to the river Anafre in Ajen for washing clothes. The water is clear. That's for sure. The water was clear until now remained visible even in the downstream. But not once in a while bathing in the river estuary Anafre. If in the surrounding areas, although it actually looks clear-water river that was polluted by all sorts deh. Of which the pig manure and sewage effluent and tofu (right now a lot of migrants from Java who lived near a creek that many of them into tofu and tempeh producers. Fortunately the river was still diguyuri sewage effluent and tofu only and e-oak pork and waste instead of hazardous chemicals because there is no any factory in the city of Jayapura usual spewing chemical wastes as in Java).

Back to the members of the fleet "Edi". The members of the fleet "Edi" aka not intend to make a permanent settlement. Certainly do not have time lah. My job was just too short and not mean to live forever. To set up a bivouac where they lived. It's kind of like a bivouac tent houses, American Indian tribes. The issue is to establish an open bivouac needed a place that when it's a piece of open space did not exist. Understandably when it lands close to the beach many sago trees. Somewhat to the middle of palm trees grow and wild bushes. Will continue his bivouac was set where?

In order to get a piece of open ground they have to cut 40 coconut trees. Surely they do not cut them down just like that. First they asked for permission to the owner of this place that the head of the tribe (Ondoafi)Tabati Sea. Yet to my knowledge anyway this early settlements which are now in North Jayapura police station area was actually entered into the tribal territory Kayo Island. If then the Dutch people are paid to the tribe Tabati Sea. I do not know why. Understandably I do not see with my own eyes what happened at that time (he he he). I do not even born then. It could be that when it came out the foreigners are interest Tabati Sea rather than the people of the tribe Kayo Island.

Clear-and this is officially written-these people are then paid for 40 ringgit. Forty coins worth 40 ringgit fruit is placed in the formation of a regular line in the sand as much as the number of trees felled heads. This means that the price of one ringgit coconut tree a tree. Completely honest barter system.

This camp-when viewed from the beach, standing right in front of the defect (it was his writing) that if I freely translated means the gap is a large basin on the slopes of the mountains that connect to the Cycloop. Clearly this is a marshy area that many sago trees. The first modern population was composed of 4 officers, 80 soldiers and 60 bearers. The remainder consists of the employees, servants, women and children. Anyway, the total of about 270 people. Since the establishment of the camp was that if the city of Jayapura born now (year 2012) he was already 103 years old. Yes old.

Still remember the floods in Wasior-county Bay Wondama-some years ago which destroyed most of the city?

I do not want to write about flash floods in Wasiore but wanted to give a brief comparison between a place in the Old Wasior and Hollandia (Jayapura name at the time). There are similarities between the two cities. Both Wasior and Jayapura city built in the valley. In short very few flat areas in the two cities. Hence a piece of flat areas in the city of Jayapura is now full of buildings crowded with shops and offices. The difference, though Anafre creek divides the town is only a fragment of the creek divides the city right on its south side and not really in the middle.

But that does not mean disaster never happened. Although when I lived in a small town in time and growing up to date re-visit this city in 2008 and I have never heard of flash floods in creeks Anafre. However, there was a flash flood. Right you know.

Flash flood that occurred on March 23, 1923 as written by a missionary envoy AJ De Neef. At that time the city of Jayapura (Hollandia Old) It has a permanent home is simple, half-hearted and a bridge over the river Anafre established a new construction. And then there was heavy rain and flooding that when measured up to 390 mm rainfall. As a result fatal. Framework of the newly constructed bridge washed away. So great flood that swept away so that the back of the bridge was found 70 km away from its original location on the coast of German New Guinea.

Such enormity of the flood was so A.J. De Deef writes, "A few days before the celebration of Pentecost in Hollandia time we get heavy rain. Looks like a heavy rain which poured from the mountains Cycloop. Because water from the sky fell down with great force. Rivers to overflow and flood roared our post located in the valley of the river is suffering. Floods ... it makes its way through the valley and washed away houses with him. Forest giants like strong breaking a matchstick and the people in that place ran into our house and take confidence in the cement pillars upon which our house is located. That's where our house stood like an island in the midst of a wave of indignation beyond the hard jolt. After the foam down and lost attacked and cleansed by the power of the boiling flood. However, the prayer of our Lord provides a way out. Direction when the switch floods the rooms have been submerged and side buildings have been drawn away to sea.

Thank God it happened in the past that if you look after that there was never again flood the city of Jayapura such sedahsyat last in 1923. But definitely Jayapura, in particular, and Papua in general have a different rotation of the season. If the western region of Indonesia has two seasons, April to October, known as the summer and from October to April is known as the rainy season-not the case with Papua. When I lived in Jayapura I realized the rain can come at any time beginning with the intense heat (which term when there are 13 local people in Papua sun. It's so hot) and the gathering of a number of clouds and rain ... the rain descended. It could be due to frequent rains this fall, and almost the entire city of Jayapura Papua always clean air and blue sky really. Deh try to Jayapura and watch the sky. Blue sky and white clouds. And the seagulls are flying in the sky really obvious yes.

Honestly it's a brief history of why the city of Jayapura who have old age. Next I'll tell you some interesting sights in this city worth a visit.
